Grace, 11 and her family were displaced after Cyclone Ana hit their island, bursting the banks of the River Shira and flooding their home and surrounding area. They were rescued in a canoe and taken to a refugee camp, which her father, Banda, is one of the leaders at. In the floods they lost everything and arrived with only the clothes on their back. Grace is still scared to talk abut the floods. Grace was supported by Save the Children child protection officer to support her through the trauma and gradually has found her love of singing and dancing again. THOKO CHIKONDI/SAVE THE CHILDREN

Meet the global media unit

17-year old climate champion Emran speaking at a climate event in Garissa, Kenya

Emran is 17 years old and lives in the Garissa region in northern Kenya, a region severely affected by a prolonged drought. The drought has had grave consequences for Emran and his family who are pastoralists. Emran's personal experiences have made him a dedicated climate activist. By spreading knowledge about climate and the environment among his peers, he inspires other young people in his community to take action. With support from Save the Children Emran and his friends has planted trees in school and lobbying local decision-makers to take decisions that benefit the environment in the region. Save the Children supported Emran so he could travel to Nairobi to speak at a major climate conference about the importance of working for a better climate and the devastating consequences of climate change for the people of Garissa.
