We also have a strong team of 316 volunteers, mostly from the refugee community.
The situation for children in Egypt
Egypt is a country with a population of 117 million people (November 2024). In spite of continued reform efforts by the government, Egypt has been facing economic challenges over the past few years, including a rise in inflation and drops in value of the national currency. The Egyptian economy depends on key revenue streams such as Suez Canal transit fees, natural gas exports, and tourism, all of which have been disrupted by the crises in the region, as well as the global impact of the war in Ukraine. Egypt is presently bordering two ongoing conflicts, Gaza to the east and Sudan to the south, in addition to protracted instability in Libya to the west.
Regional conflicts have led to an influx of migrants into the country over the past two years, pressuring an already-suffering economy and straining the provision of public services. According to UNHCR reports[1], as of Dec 2025, there are 1,098,311 refugees
and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR Egypt. Sudanese (76%) are the largest group, followed by Syrians (13%) . Most refugees live in Greater Cairo and Alexandria. .Children and women represent nearly 74.5% of all refugees and asylum seekers in the country;. As per UNHCR Egypt factsheet, as of 30 November 2025, some 999,000 people forced to flee Sudan have approached UNHCR for registration.
Of them, 79% (more than 780,000 people) have been fully registered.
