Nafeesa*, 24, gave birth to her son, Yaqub*, three days ago, at a site for displaced people in Sudan. She used to live in Khartoum with her husband and seven-year-old son Ali*, but violent conflict forced them to flee their home. Nafeesa says before the conflict started, her life in Khartoum was good, their financial situation was stable, and she had access to quality healthcare for her first pregnancy and birth. Now they’re displaced, it’s difficult for them to afford food and basic supplies like soap. Nafeesa says they’re surviving only with the support of humanitarian organisations and their neighbours’ generosity. Save the Children has deployed its Emergency Health Unit to support mobile health teams in White Nile and Al Gezira States to provide essential healthcare services for host communities and displaced children and adults. Services include treatment for diseases, vaccinations, maternal, newborn and child healthcare, the management of malnutrition cases and psychosocial support. Millions of children in Sudan have missed nearly 500 days of learning since the war started in April 2023 in what has become one of the world’s longest school closures, surpassing the worst shutdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic, Save the Children said. New analysis by Save the Children on the scale of the emergency crisis in Sudan comes ahead of the 8th International Day of Education, that was set up to mark the role education plays in peace, development and breaking the cycle of poverty. When the conflict started in Khartoum in April 2023, 14-year-old Mona* was heading home from school after her afternoon classes. Quickly, Mona* run home and hid under the bed with her siblings. She says everyone at home was scared, especially when bullets started falling near her home. Fearing for their life, the family fled Khartoum in a rush after being trapped in the house for three days. Mona* told Save the Children that they braced the violence for another three days to find safety in Kosti City, White Nile state. When Mona* arrived in the camp, Save the Children gave her and other displaced children a bag with pencils, rubbers, sharpeners, exercise books and colouring materials. The aid agency also gave her a dignity kit to take care of my special needs as a girl, something Mona* is really grateful for. Amidst the conflict in Sudan that forced schools to close, a group of educators launched an Accelerated Learning Programme to keep adolescents learning. Despite insecurity and displacement, the free classes quickly attracted dozens of students and became a safe and consistent space for education. Led by teacher Ehsan, the initiative helped children like Maha*, 8, regain confidence, reconnect with learning and return to school, offering hope to families during one of the country’s darkest times.
