"Collaborating closely between the School-Based Child Protection Mechanism and the Community-Based Child Protection Mechanism is crucial for solving issues and protecting children from violence, while also enhancing their mental and physical health," stated Meng Heang, who effectively handled and referred child protection cases at his school.

Meng Heang is a 56-year-old school principal at a primary school located in a rural area of Kang Meas district, Kampong Cham, Cambodia, where some schools still face ongoing challenges, as many children report experiencing various forms of violence both at school and in the community.  These issues persist due to the ineffective child protection system.

In the coastal province of Koh Kong, located in the west of Cambodia, 28-year-old Saychhun used to work hard on agriculture through the traditional way. “I often face obstacles in growing vegetables while striving to generate additional income for my family.” She recalled that her crops were often damaged by pests/disease, and heavy rain, which led to low productivity and income losses,” said Saychhun.

As a young mother living with her husband, elderly parents, and 4-year-old daughter, who studies in grade 2, the pressure was immense. Her husband works in construction, and Saychhun earned a living by fishing, but the fish stocks declined, they struggled to cover basic daily expenses, school supplies, and medical needs.

Cambodia Pioneers New Era of Climate-Safe Schools: BRACE Project Launches with Green Climate Fund and Global Partnership for Education Support

Funded by the Green Climate Fund and the Global Partnership for Education, today, the Royal Government of Cambodia, through the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS), launched the BRACE project—a groundbreaking initiative to protect education from climate shocks. As Cambodia faces intensifying floods, droughts, and extreme heat, the education sector stands on the frontlines of the climate crisis. 

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA – December 02, 2025: A new NZD$12 million project designed to boost rural household incomes and ensure child well-being through climate-resilient horticulture was announced on November 29, 2025, at an event presided over by New Zealand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, alongside Cambodia’s Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

With funding support from the Norwegian Organization for Sexual and Gender Diversity (FRI) through Save the Children Norway, Save the Children in Cambodia, in partnership with Cambodia Children and Young People Movement for Child Rights (CCYMCR), is helping underprivileged children and youth in rural areas to unlock their potential and advocate for a safe and supportive space through empowered them with leadership skills to fight for inclusion and equality regarding children's rights.

Phnom Penh, 7 July 2025 — In a landmark effort to confront the escalating climate crisis impacting Cambodian children, Save the Children, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS), proudly announces the launch of the groundbreaking "Building the Climate Resilience of Children and Communities through the Education Sector" (BRACE) project. 

Save the Children and its partners run emergency programmes to protect children at high risk of child marriage, so-called honour killings, and other family violence as well as to protect children with suicidal ideation after surviving sexual violence, child recruitment or other trauma. Many of these children are unaccompanied without family support. 

Children routinely interact with people they don’t know online and respond with caution when approached.
